Today people have their choice of telecommunications provider. This is the company that supplies telephone service and is different from an internet provider or ISP. There are some companies that have, as they are called, bundle deals.

The Business ADSL company that offers these options will usually call it a bundle deal. But telecommunications deals with telephone service specifically. There was a time though when people had little choice of providers.

One ADSL company controlled most of the communication connections. There were other companies, but only a few companies covered most of the area of the country. A person had to two choices, choose the telephone company that serviced that particular area, or choose not to have a telephone.

The telephone company stifled competition even as technology grew. Some companies were able to offer low long distance rates. But they needed the cooperation of the major phone services in order to connect their systems.

The companies were allowed to refuse to work with the upstart companies because of government regulation. The regulations helped further the monopoly. But as technology grew, the regulations were seen as preventing the growth of the industry.

The regulations were not only preventing companies from competing with the major phone services, but it was preventing the new technology from being offered to customers. The fact was that the country was not moving forward in communications because the government was helping the major players deprive the people of the latest and best devices and capabilities.

But some brave souls fought against the telephone monopoly and those who supported government regulations. Today, communication services are much more advanced and much less expensive. The competition that was allowed to flourish by eliminating government regulation has led to much advancement that probably would not have occurred if the industry was still regulated as it was before the early 1980's.

It is true the the telecommunications industry is huge and getting bigger all the time. But in most people's opinion, the deregulation was a good step for everyone concerned. Today people can even choose Voip service.

This stands for voice over internet protocol. People can talk for free using their internet connection. This advancement probably would not exist if it were not for the deregulation of the telephone industry.
