Remote Working Part 1 – Introduction
Obviously not everybody is allowed to work remotely as many jobs require individuals to go to their employers premises or travel to undertake their tasks in person. But for those of us who are able to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and give some practical wisdom by putting it on the web with the sole objective of providing valuable ways for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I would caution you that there are groups of people on the net who will try and sell you information for preposterous sums of cash, trust me you don’t have to do this.
I am privileged to be permitted to work wherever I choose and just about everybody who asks me what work I do wants to learn how I am able to work remotely. Don’t misinterpret me I am still developing the science of remote working as each day I discover folks on the web who show me new approaches and I am always coming across new systems and methods that make my life easier and make me more effective.
In the past 7 years I have substantially adapted my working practices to allow me to do all of my work remotely with a portfolio of online tools and robust self management. One lunchtime whilst searching the net I discovered Quickbooks online and this brought to my attention what just might be possible. My discovery of online 'on demand' small business accounting software was a pivotal moment for me and the start of my ‘remote working career.
I want to mention up front that proficiently working remotely is as much about the software as it is about self management. Working remotely also means informing your colleagues, supervisors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will keep in touch with you.
In 'Remote Working Part 2 – The art of working smarter ' I steer you through how to focus.
